- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian shares were mostly higher on Tuesday, tracking Wall Street gains, while the Japanese yen was trading near a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar.
- Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.9%. South Korea’s Kospi index, which has performed strongly during the global AI frenzy due to growing demand for memory chips from major chipmakers like SK Hynix, gained 0.97%.
- Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.6% and the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.5%. Taiwan's Taiex picked up 2.5%.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.79 points or 0.17% to 455.8. Total trade volume was down with 169,321 shares changing hands at a total value of 904.8 million riel or close to $225,000 US dollars.
- On the main board, three stocks were up, led by Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ, while only one stock, Pestech Cambodia, was down. Over on the growth board all three stocks were flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD remained stable at 4,026 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 101.25.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices slipped on Tuesday, and were set for their biggest quarterly loss since the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, with investors eyeing potential U.S.-Iran talks in Doha amid a strained interim ceasefire in the four-month-old war. Brent August crude futures, which expire on Tuesday, were down 0.41% at $72.85 US dollars a barrel. The more actively traded September contract was down 0.1% at $73.84 US dollars a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate for August fell 0.2% to $70.62 US dollars a barrel. (0824 GMT)
- Gold prices were set for their biggest quarterly drop since April 2013, as uncertainty in the Middle East gave way to expectations of U.S. rate hikes to tame elevated inflation.
- Spot gold inched 0.2% higher to $4,026.17 US dollars per ounce , but has shed 11.2% so far in June in what could be its fourth consecutive monthly fall.
- U.S. gold futures for August delivery were steady at $4,040.60 US dollars. (0732 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin dropped below $60,000 dollars, trading around $59,500 US dollars, as U.S. spot ETFs recorded historic net outflows of over $4 billion US dollars for the month. The decline was further exacerbated by institutional shifts, significant leverage short positions by large whales, and incoming regulatory changes.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- On June 29, Unilever, the London-headquartered multinational consumer packaged goods giant, announced strategic plans to establish local manufacturing lines in Cambodia to deepen its market presence and meet growing consumer demand. Unilever aims to transition from purely importing to establishing direct production lines within Cambodia, diversifying its supply chain and offering a broader product portfolio locally.
- The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI), in collaboration with the Association of Cambodia Investment Federation, launched the Campaign on Business Development and Product Compliance on June 29, bringing together around 2,000 entrepreneurs, manufacturers, SMEs, and business representatives to promote business competitiveness through quality, productivity, standards and innovation. Presiding over the event, H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, said Cambodia's next phase of economic development requires businesses to compete not only on cost but increasingly on quality, productivity, compliance, and innovation.
- On June 30, ASEAN member states approved the restructuring of the region's science and technology governance, launched a $1.2 million US dollars artificial intelligence initiative, and operationalised ASEAN's first shared supercomputing hub to help address rapidly evolving economic and climate challenges. These initiatives were formally endorsed through a Joint Media Statement released following the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-22), which was chaired by Lao PDR under the theme "Advancing the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035".
