- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian share markets extended their gains on Tuesday, building on early-week momentum as technology and semiconductor stocks continued to power global equities higher.
- MSCI’s broad Asia-Pacific index outside Japan rose 0.8% to a two-week high, while South Korea’s technology-heavy market climbed as much as 2% before paring gains. Taiwan shares reached a record high, while Chinese blue chips gained 0.2% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.3%. The Nikkei 225 index remained closed for a national bridge holiday.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.44 points or 0.07% to 592.14.
- Total trade volume was down with 799,622 shares changing hands at a total value of 4.62 billion riel or over $1.14 million US dollars.
- On the main board, six stocks were up, led by Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ, while two stocks were down, with Grand Twins International, as the biggest loser of the day.
- Over on the growth board, DBD Engineering and Picasso City Garden were up, while JS Land stayed flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,055 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 100.40.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices fell on Tuesday after reports that Iran said it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, if the US takes initial steps to ease military pressure, easing concerns over disruptions to a key global oil shipping route.
- The Brent crude futures November contract fell 0.89% to $99.45 US dollars a barrel. The WTI October contract, which expires on Tuesday, lost 1.14% to $94.69 US dollars a barrel. (0932 GMT)
- Gold prices fell on Tuesday as a slight rise in oil prices and hawkish signals from U.S. Federal Reserve policymakers reinforced market expectations that interest rates will stay higher for longer.
- Spot gold was down 1.1% at $4,295.62 US dollars per ounce. US gold futures fell 1.2% to $4,332 US dollars. (0832 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin rose 1.7% to $85,936.6 US dollars as a recent rally was extended by top corporate holder Strategy disclosing more purchases of the cryptocurrency this week.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- Cambodia sees opportunities to strengthen trade and investment cooperation with Chongqing, China, by making greater use of cooperation mechanisms under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and enhancing connectivity with inland Chinese markets. Speaking to AKP on the occasion of the official launch of a media promotional campaign in Chongqing on September 20, the Cambodian Consul-General in Chongqing said Cambodia could promote Chongqing’s market and investment opportunities to Cambodian chambers of commerce and business associations. He highlighted the importance of organising reciprocal business delegations and trade missions, as well as facilitating direct connections between Cambodian and Chinese enterprises through trade fairs and exhibitions to expand business matchmaking and investment opportunities.
- Andersen Consulting Cambodia has ranked the top four banks with assets over $5 billion US dollars, placing ABA Bank in first place. Andersen announced on September 21 that its specialised research and rating platform had ranked ABA Bank first with 4.50 points, Acleda Bank second with 4.39 points, followed by Canadia Bank and KB Prasac Bank sharing third place with 4.30 points. According to Andersen, ABA’s top result reflects, “market leadership, profitable scale, National Bank of Canada support and technology”. In the $2 to $4.9 billion asset category announced earlier, Cambodian Public Bank ranked first at 4.31 points followed by Bank of China (Hong Kong) at 4.22 points, Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia (FTB) at 4.05 points, Sathapana Bank at 4.0 points and Wing Bank at 3.98 points.
- Clean Energy Week (CEW) 2026 concluded on September 21, having charted a pathway toward a more energy secure and economically resilient Cambodia. The week closed with “Powering Forward: Celebrating Cambodia's Clean Energy Leaders”, an event recognising the collective efforts and partnerships driving Cambodia's clean energy agenda. H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, said Cambodia’s clean-energy transition is increasingly linked to the country’s industrial and technological transformation. A highlight of Clean Energy Week 2026 was the Clean Energy Awards, which recognised outstanding contributions from individuals, organisations, and initiatives driving Cambodia's clean energy progress. Mark Low of ISI Land received the Clean Energy Champion Award, Agro Agape received the Cleantech Award, and Smoke Free Village Project from SNV received the Most Impactful Clean Energy Project Award.
