Phnom Penh Contemporary Launches Cambodia's First Edition of Contemporary Art Event
Cambodia is set to host a new cultural chapter with the inaugural edition of Phnom Penh Contemporary, a five-day celebration of contemporary art at the iconic Royal University of Fine Arts.
More than an art exhibition, Phnom Penh Contemporary is a vibrant platform designed to highlight Cambodian contemporary art, connect artists with collectors and institutions, and position Phnom Penh as an emerging renowned cultural destination in Southeast Asia.
Bringing together leading Cambodian artists, emerging talents, collectors, diplomats, business leaders, cultural institutions and the wider public, Phnom Penh Contemporary creates a remarkable opportunity to experience the diversity, creativity and ambition shaping Cambodia’s contemporary artistic landscape.
“After a decade sharing arty journeys within Cambodia, I feel that it is time to embody our mission as the catalyst between a growing Cambodian contemporary voice and the appetence of the global market for a strongly rooted creative community , artists who shared common heritage & are connected to the growing global challenges," said Marina Pok, Founder of Phnom Penh Contemporary.
From November 15–16, 2026, Cambodia is hosting the 20th Francophonie Summit, welcoming delegates from 90 member states and governments of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), who will talk about “Reinvesting in Peace & Lasting Sustainability”. Phnom Penh Contemporary will overlap with the summit and present more than twenty artists, some visual artists from the diaspora, established artists, upcoming artists & emerging artists.
The art exhibition is presented with the personal encouragement of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Royal University of Fine Arts and the Henry Luce Foundation, reflecting a unique collaboration between key Cambodian institutions, international philanthropy and Cambodia’s creative community.
Nheak Oknha Sear Rithy, Founder and Chairman of WorldBridge Group, and Melita Koulmandas, Founder & CEO of Song Saa Collective, will act as the exhibition's Founding Patrons.

Set within the historic Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh Contemporary is a reflection of the growing relationship between cultural and economic development, highlighting the important role of the creative industries in Cambodia’s future.
Throughout five days, visitors will experience:
- A curated exhibition featuring Cambodia’s leading contemporary artists Dedicated spaces for emerging artists and Indigenous sacred art.
- Artist talks and live discussions exploring creativity, heritage and identity
- A silent auction featuring modern artworks from a private collection.
- A vibrant Contemporary Alley with food, student artists and community activities.
- School visits designed to inspire Cambodia’s next generation of creative talent.
The first two days are dedicated to partners, media, collectors, embassies through exclusive curator and director-led preview tours, before the exhibition opens to the public for a weekend of exhibitions, performances and cultural experiences.
A key feature of the inaugural edition is the strong emphasis on developing Cambodia’s creative ecosystem. Phnom Penh Contemporary works closely with the Royal University of Fine Arts to provide students with hands-on experience in exhibition management, while creating opportunities for young artists to present and sell their work and compete for the inaugural PPC Young Artist Award.
“Phnom Penh Contemporary launches with the theme of evolution guiding its approach, and what better lens through which to view the growth and elevation of contemporary art practices in Cambodia," noted Steven L. Bridges, senior curator and director of curatorial affairs at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University in the US, and Phnom Penh Contemporary Curator. "From my own involvement with Cambodian artists, I have seen firsthand their emergence as some of the most compelling, thoughtful, and evocative artists on the international stage today. In their approach to materiality, form and composition, and the conceptual dimensions of contemporary art, and through the visibility created by PPC, Cambodian artists are well-poised to expand the role of contemporary art globally.”

The event also highlights Cambodia’s rich cultural diversity through a dedicated Indigenous Sacred Art Space, developed with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation, presenting Indigenous art traditions that are rarely showcased within major art exhibitions.
Phnom Penh Contemporary is envisioned as the kick off of a long-term cultural initiative that will strengthen Cambodia’s Economy by creating lasting connections between Cambodian artists and international collectors, curators, galleries and cultural institutions.
The event concludes with a public Closing Ceremony celebrating participating artists, partners and the announcement of the inaugural RUFA Young Artist Award, followed by live performances showcasing Cambodia’s vibrant contemporary creative scene.
