- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Oil, chip stocks and the dollar were under pressure in Asia on Thursday and just about everything else was up after US voters swept the Democrats to a series of stunning midterm election wins, a result that raised hopes for an end to the US-Iran war. South Korea's chipmaker-heavy KOSPI sank nearly 6% and remained within a whisker of a new seven-month low. Taiwan's benchmark index fell over 3%, poised for an 8% weekly decline, its worst weekly performance since April 2025. Tech equipment suppliers dragged on the Nikkei which fell 2%, although the broader Topix was 0.8% higher, underscoring the divergent market reaction to the decisive election results.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 1.53 points or 0.25% to 607.25. Total trade volume was up with 208,559 shares changing hands at a total value of 823.4 million riel or over $202,000 US dollars.
- On the main board, three stocks were up, led by CAMGSM, while two stocks were down with Pestech Cambodia as the biggest loser of the day. Over on the growth board, JS Land was down, while DBD Engineering and Picasso City Garden stayed flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,086 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 101.39.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices fell for a fourth day on Thursday on expectations the losses US President Donald Trump's Republican Party suffered in Congressional elections this week may reduce the risk of further escalation of the US-Israeli war on Iran. Brent futures fell 0.85% to $93.82 US dollars a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 1.36%, to $86.92 US dollars. (0426 GMT)
- Gold climbed to its highest level in over two weeks, on a weaker US dollar and Treasury yields as easing oil prices helped temper inflation concerns after major Democratic gains in the US midterm elections raised hopes of a US-Iran peace deal. Spot gold rose 1.6% to $4,123.71 US dollars per ounce after touching its highest since October 20 earlier in the session. Bullion climbed about 3.4% on Wednesday, its biggest daily gain since August 19. US gold futures for December delivery climbed 1.5% to $4,133.00 US dollars. (0609 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin held above $80,000 dollars on Thursday as cryptocurrencies joined a broader market rebound after Democrats won both houses of Congress. Bitcoin traded around $80,484 US dollars during Asian morning hours, up 5.7% over 24 hours.
