Phnom Penh’s Old International Airport to Open as Public Park During Khmer New Year
AKP Phnom Penh, 06 April 2026
The former Phnom Penh International Airport will be temporarily opened to the public as a recreational park during the upcoming Khmer New Year holiday, according to an official announcement by an inter-ministerial working group released on April 6.
The trial opening, set to run for nine days from April 11 to April 19, aims to provide a free public space for sightseeing, leisure, exercise, and sports activities, while also showcasing the historical architecture of the airport.
Visitors will have access to several key areas, including the terminal buildings, the control tower built in the 1950s, the VIP terminal zone, aircraft parking areas, and parts of the runway, all of which hold historical significance in Cambodia’s civil aviation sector.
Authorities have also decorated parts of the airport with displays and banners featuring traditional Khmer New Year games to enhance the festive atmosphere.
The public will be allowed to enter from 5 AM to 9 PM daily. Pedestrians are required to use the VIP entrance, while those arriving by bicycle, motorcycle, or car must enter and exit through designated terminal gates.
To ensure safety, order, and cleanliness, visitors are required to follow on-site instructions, respect restricted areas, and properly use provided sanitation facilities.
The sale of goods, consumption of alcohol, and use of fireworks or explosives within the airport compound are strictly prohibited.
Parking fees are set at KHR 1,000 Riel (USD 0.25) for motorcycles and KHR 2,000 (USD 0.50) for cars, while bicycle parking is free of charge.
The working group encouraged the public to take part in the initiative in a spirit of unity and celebration, contributing to a successful and orderly trial of transforming the historic airport into a public space.
