- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian shares wobbled on Thursday as a rally in semiconductors lost momentum, while oil prices surged as a resumption of hostilities in the Gulf reignited inflation fears and hammered bonds.
- MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan reversed earlier gains and were last off 0.5% as the rally in chipmakers faltered, while Japan’s Nikkei climbed 1.3% to break a three-day losing streak.
- South Korea’s KOSPI rallied as much as 4% before turning 1% lower.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 2.25 points or 0.5% to 451.41.
- Total trade volume was down with 95,499 shares changing hands at a total value of 663.7 million riel or over $165,000 US dollars.
- On the main board, four stocks were up, led by CAMGSM, while only one stock, Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, was down. Over on the growth board, JS Land was down, while Picasso City Garden and DBD Engineering remained flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD remained stable at 4,036 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 101.97.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices fell on Thursday as markets assessed the impact of fresh U.S. strikes on Iran, which could hinder progress on talks to end their war and allow for the full reopening of the key Strait of Hormuz.
- Brent crude futures fell 1.32% to $76.99 US dollars a barrel.
- U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures lost 1.2% at $72.64 US dollars a barrel. (0749 GMT)
- Gold edged higher as the dollar weakened, though investors remained cautious, closely watching developments in the Middle East for their impact on inflation and monetary policy.
- Spot gold rose 0.8% to $4,106.82 US dollars per ounce, after dropping to its lowest since July 1 on Wednesday.
- U.S. gold futures for August delivery were up 0.8% to $4,116.40 US dollars. (0901 GMT)
- Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin was trading above $63,000 US dollars, recovering after a drop.
- The recent price momentum was bolstered by $510 million dollars in inflows into Wall Street spot ETFs, effectively breaking an eight-week outflow streak.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings on July 7 during the second day of the "Global Dialogue on AI Governance". The talks aimed to expand Cambodia's international digital network and showcase its technological advancements. In a meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General and Envoy on Technology, H.E. Chea Vandeth outlined Cambodia’s initiatives to elevate domestic digital literacy. These include the Techo Digital Talent Scholarship, the establishment of community tech centres, and computer lab installations in primary schools. He also highlighted the Cambodian government’s investment in public digital infrastructure, specifically pointing to the state-backed verification platform, verify.gov.kh.
- The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to support priority projects and programmes aimed at strengthening water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development. The reaffirmation was made by the Vice President for Planet at the World Bank Group, during a meeting with the Cambodian Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology on July 8. The Cambodian minister expressed appreciation for the World Bank’s longstanding partnership, particularly its financing of the Cambodia Water Security Improvement Project, a flagship initiative to enhance water resources management, modernise irrigation systems, strengthen meteorological services, support climate change adaptation, and empower farmer water-user communities.
- Cambodia and Japan signed an Exchange of Notes and accompanying documents on a Japanese grant aid worth 416 million Japanese yen (approximately $2.8 million US dollars) on July 8, to support the implementation of the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship. The documents were signed by the Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia. Under the grant aid, young Cambodian government officials will be provided with opportunities to pursue graduate studies at prestigious universities in Japan, contributing to the development of Cambodia's human resources.
