- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian shares reversed course on Thursday after the previous day's AI-fuelled rally, as fickle enthusiasm over AI spending turned cautious, while oil prices held in a tight range as markets assessed prospects for an Iran peace deal.
- MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.39%, led by declines in tech firms. South Korean shares extended losses to 4.16%, while Japan's Nikkei was down 0.94%, paring an earlier drop of as much as 2.05%.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.99 points to 462.18. Total trade volume was down with 147,439 shares changing hands at a total value of 756.6 million riel or over $187,000 US dollars.
- On the main board, two stocks were up, led by CAMGSM, while five stocks were down with Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ as the biggest loser of the day. Over on the growth board, DBD Engineering was up, JS Land was down, and Picasso City Garden stayed flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,055 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 99.76.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices climbed on Thursday as investors remained cautious on the outcome of Iran-Oman talks and whether they will restore flows via the Strait of Hormuz, while reports of attacks on Saudi tankers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden renewed supply tensions.
- Brent crude futures gained 0.58% to $79.91 US dollars a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures added 0.48% to $75.58 US dollars a barrel. (0640 GMT)
- Gold rose for a fourth session on Thursday and touched its highest level in seven weeks, helped by a softer dollar, while market participants assessed the chances of the Strait of Hormuz reopening. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $4,254.98 US dollars per ounce, after earlier hitting its highest level since June 18. On Wednesday, bullion posted its biggest daily gain since February.U.S. gold futures rose 0.2% to $4,312.80 US dollars. (0636 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin held above $64,600 US dollars on Thursday, up marginally on the day and 0.5% on the week, while the rest of the majors offered little in the way of direction.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- Cambodia and Belgium have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in digital technology training and human resource development, following a meeting between the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, H.E. Chea Vandeth, and Belgian Ambassador to Cambodia, Michel Parys, on Wednesday. The two officials initiated direct collaboration between the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) and Belgian universities, focusing on advanced digital skills training and academic exchange programmes for professors. During the meeting, both sides also discussed preparations for the 20th Francophonie Summit and the accompanying FrancoTech event, which Cambodia is set to host later this year.
- High-ranking government officials, foreign diplomats, and leaders of international business organisations gathered in Phnom Penh on August 6 for the 3rd Public-Private Sector Breakfast Briefing, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing Cambodia's industrial transformation and strengthening the country's economic foundation. H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), presided over the event. Hosted by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (CCCC) in collaboration with the CDC, the briefing was held under the theme "Strengthening the Supply Chain Foundation: Empowering Cambodia's Industrial Transformation." Discussions reflected the international business community's confidence in Cambodia's investment climate and highlighted the importance of maintaining an open and constructive public-private dialogue to further improve the business environment and strengthen investor confidence.
- The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) has officially launched a suite of new industrial services on its Digital Public Service System, streamlining administrative processes to make them faster, more convenient, transparent, and efficient. Businesses can now digitally apply for factory registration, secure a Prakas on the establishment of a factory branch, and request new or renewed Certificates of Factory Operation. Furthermore, the portal handles permits for production expansion, factory relocation, shareholder changes, factory renames, and the addition of new product lines, while also facilitating Certificates of Technical and Safety Compliance for operating high-risk equipment and machinery.
