  • We start with a quick look at regional markets. Chip stocks tanked across Asia on Tuesday, rattled by the threat of Chinese competition and worries about who's paying for the AI boom, ​while sliding oil prices did little to allay nerves about U.S. rate hikes potentially starting as soon as this week.
  • South Korea's KOSPI dived almost 10% to a three-month low. 
  • Japan's Nikkei slid about 4%, touching a two-year low.
  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed 0.41% higher, while the Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.16%.
  • Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.52 points or 0.11% to 453.36. Total trade volume was up with 494,637 shares changing hands at a total value of 1.8 billion riel or over $446,000 US dollars.
  • On the main board, two stocks were up, led by Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ, while four stocks were down with Grand Twins International as the biggest loser of the day. 
  • Over on the growth board, JS Land and DBD Engineering were down, while Picasso City Garden was up.
  • Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,042 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 101.53.
  • Looking at global commodities, oil prices extended losses on Tuesday, hitting their lowest levels in ‌more than a week as hopes for a resolution to the U.S. Iran conflict grew and traders continued to assess developments in the Middle East. Brent crude futures were down 1.98% at $86.61 US dollars, after hitting their lowest level since July 17. U.S. 
  • West Texas ​Intermediate crude was at $81.35 US dollars a barrel, down 1.53%, after marking its lowest since July 20. (0739 GMT)
  • Gold prices ​fell, pressured by a stronger dollar as markets awaited ‌the U.S. Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision for clues on the interest rate outlook. 
  • Spot gold fell 0.6% to $4,051.07 US dollars per ounce after rising as much as 1% on ​Monday. U.S. gold futures for August delivery lost 0.6% to $4,051.60 US dollars. (0726 GMT)
  • Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin fell more than 3% on Tuesday, slipping toward the $63,000 US dollar level and hitting its lowest in ten days, as a selloff in AI-linked technology shares spilled over into cryptocurrencies while investors braced for a pivotal U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision later this week. The world's largest cryptocurrency last traded 3.1% lower at $63,494.8 US dollars, hitting its lowest since July 17.

     

  • Moving on now to other business-related news,
    • The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) held a press conference on July 27, on the new customs tariff rates on imports from Cambodia to the United States, following a compliance investigation under Section 301 of the 1974 U.S. Trade Act. Under this act, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has imposed a 10 per cent tariff – which took effect on July 24 – targeting trade partners with forced-labour import restrictions. The CDC press conference, led by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the CDC, clarified that Cambodia’s new tariff rate is 10 per cent, plus the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) tariff rate, and will not be added on top of the previous 19 per cent reciprocal tariff.
    • Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received the CEO of MinebeaMitsumi Inc., and his colleagues for a courtesy meeting and working discussion at the Peace Palace on July 28. During the meeting, the MinebeaMitsumi Inc. CEO expressed his deep appreciation to the Cambodian government for its continued strong support for the company’s operations in the Kingdom. The CEO briefed the Prime Minister on the company’s business progress, plans to inaugurate a new factory in Cambodia, and its plans to further expand investment in the country. He noted that the company’s success and growth have helped attract other Japanese investors to Cambodia, while reaffirming MinebeaMitsumi’s continued confidence in Cambodia’s investment climate and stability.
    • Cambodia’s banking system remains healthy despite facing various challenges, particularly risks stemming from external factors, according to the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, H.E. Dr. Chea Serey. Speaking at the opening of the NBC’s meeting to review work achievements during the first half of 2026 and set objectives for the second half of the year on July 27, the central bank governor said that due to the prudent development of Cambodia’s banking system over the past three decades, the sector has increasingly been expected by the government, private sector, and public to play a greater role in responding to crises. The NBC and the country's banking system have worked closely together within their respective mandates, while maintaining price and financial stability as the highest priority.
