- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian equities held steady on Friday even as a sharp U.S. bond market selloff drove long-term yields to 20-year highs, spiking global borrowing costs and risking a pullback in expensive stocks.
- MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 0.1%, with most markets, including the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and South Korea, closed for a holiday. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.3%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index skidded 1.4%.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 1.08 points or 0.18% to 593.62.
- Total trade volume was up with 1,366,566 shares changing hands at a total value of 7.26 billion riel or over $1.78 million US dollars.
- On the main board, two stocks were up, led by Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ, while seven stocks were down, with Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, as the biggest loser of the day. Over on the growth board, all stocks stayed flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,057 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 100.11.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices fell on Friday as markets weighed the possibility of a truce between the U.S. and Iran against concerns that increasing attacks against Saudi Arabia by Houthi rebels could disrupt supply from the key Middle Eastern producer.
- Brent was down 1.4% at $105.11 US dollars a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was down 2.1% at $92.61 US dollars a barrel. (0541 GMT)
- Gold prices eased on Friday and were set to post a weekly loss, pressured by a stronger dollar and growing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated to contain inflation.
- Spot gold fell 0.1% to $4,274.90 US dollars per ounce, down over 2% so far this week. US gold futures edged 0.3% higher to $4,310.30 US dollars. (0632 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin moved little on Friday amid pressure from surging Treasury yields, while cryptocurrency markets also watched for the fallout of a major hack targeting exchange Bitget. The world’s biggest crypto fell 0.1% to $83,999.6 US dollars, and was trading up 3.4% for the week.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- Cambodia and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 24 to deepen bilateral cooperation in labour and vocational training, focusing on green skills development and labour market integration to meet future industrial demands. The agreement was signed during a meeting at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai between the Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training and the Chinese Minister of Human Resources and Social Security. The MoU establishes a joint framework to enhance vocational education, foster green skills development, and advance the digital modernisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems. Under the agreement, both nations will encourage relevant institutions to coordinate regularly to ensure the effective implementation of key initiatives.
- The Cambodian government has issued new 50,000-riel and 100,000 riel banknotes, according to two separate sub-decrees issued on September 25. The new 50,000-riel and 100,000-riel banknotes will circulate alongside existing banknotes from the date of the announcement. According to a separate Prakas issued by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), the 50,000-riel banknote, equivalent to about $12.5 US dollars, measures 155 mm in length and 72 mm in width, with dark yellow and brown as its dominant colours. The 100,000-riel banknote, equivalent to about $25 US dollars, measures 170 mm in length and 75 mm in width, with green and grey as its dominant colours.
- The Cambodian government has launched a cash-support programme for poor, vulnerable and at-risk households affected by pressure from rising fuel and gas prices, with the first payment starting on September 25. According to a government announcement, the programme is part of the Royal Government’s comprehensive intervention measures to respond to multiple crises and aims to ease the living-cost burden on vulnerable families while strengthening Cambodia’s social and economic resilience. The cash assistance will be provided in addition to other benefits already received by families holding valid Equity Cards and Vulnerable Family Cards. The programme is expected to cover approximately 4.6 million people nationwide. Each eligible household in Phnom Penh will receive 60,000 Riel per payment, plus 5,000 Riel for each family member. Households in urban areas outside Phnom Penh will receive 48,000 Riel per payment, plus 5,000 Riel per member. Eligible rural households, meanwhile, will receive 40,000 Riel per payment, together with an additional 5,000 Riel for each family member. The assistance will be provided in four installments in 2026, scheduled for September 25, October 16, November 16 and December 16.
