- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian shares were on track for a sixth consecutive day of gains on Wednesday, driven by strong consumer demand for AI apps that boosted tech stocks. South Korean stocks gained 0.5%, with Samsung up over 2%, while Taiwan firmed 0.7% to near all-time peaks.
- MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.3%, having now risen for six straight days. Chinese blue chips eased 0.5%.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.4 points or 0.07% to 592.54.
- Total trade volume was up with 996,133 shares changing hands at a total value of 7.95 billion riel or over $1.96 million US dollars.
- On the main board, three stocks were up, led by Royal Group Phnom Penh SEZ, while five stocks were down, with Grand Twins International, as the biggest loser of the day. Over on the growth board, all stocks were down.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD weakened slightly to 4,056 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 100.85.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices extended declines on Wednesday as investors eyed improved Gulf supply after Saudi Arabia restarted operations at a critical pipeline.
- Brent crude futures fell 0.79% to $98.47 US dollars a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures fell 1.34% to $89.31 US dollars per barrel. (0651 GMT)
- Gold prices fell on Wednesday as investors weighed the prospect of major central banks keeping interest rates elevated for longer in their efforts to curb persistent inflation.
- Spot gold fell 0.6% to $4,329.31 US dollars per ounce, US gold futures for December delivery were down 0.2% at $4,366.90 US dollars. (0623 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, bitcoin slipped to $86,388 US dollars, pulling back from overbought extremes after a parabolic rally.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and Mastercard have discussed expanding the use of Cambodia’s digital payment services among international visitors, with a focus on the Bakong Tourists application and stronger measures to prevent payment fraud. NBC Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey held a working discussion with Mastercard’s senior management team on September 22. The meeting highlighted progress in Cambodia’s payment system development, particularly the expansion of the Bakong Tourists payment application to international users. The initiative is aimed at making digital payments more convenient for international visitors travelling in Cambodia, as the country continues to develop its digital payment ecosystem. The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening the security of digital payment systems as the use of digital transactions continues to expand.
- The two-day International Conference on Combating Online Scams (ICCOS-2026), under the theme “Acting Together Towards Breaking the Chain and Eradication of Online Scams,” officially kicked off on September 23 in Phnom Penh under the presidency of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The event brought together delegates from over 20 countries, including representatives from countries in the region, Africa, Europe, China and the United States, as well as representatives of the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (UNODC-ROSEAP), and the Lancang-Mekong Integrated Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Centre (LMLECC). This international conference has attracted a total of 340 national and international journalists from 66 local and foreign media organisations.
- The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and Genrich Investment Co., Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to research and advance sustainable tourism development, environmental conservation, carbon credits, and climate solutions in Cambodia. The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry’s headquarters on September 22, was chaired by H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism. The Minister expressed high appreciation, praise, and gratitude to Genrich Investment Co., Ltd. for its excellent initiative aimed at developing Cambodia's tourism sector sustainably. He noted that the partnership will focus on studying and developing projects related to sustainable climate solutions, carbon credits, environmental restoration, and ecotourism in Cambodia, in compliance with the active laws and regulations of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
