- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Stocks edged higher in Asia on Wednesday as a respite in the global bond selloff and a drop in oil prices steadied nerves ahead of a pivotal U.S. Federal Reserve decision later in the day.
- Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.4% to 63,721.89, despite official data showing that Japan recorded a fourth consecutive month of trade deficit in August. South Korea's Kospi rose 1.3% to 6,711.62. Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged up 0.1% to 24,700.62. The Shanghai Composite index climbed 0.6% to 3,886.48.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 9.92 points or 1.71% to 589.55.
- Total trade volume was up with 1,403,204 shares changing hands at a total value of over 11.2 billion riel or over $2.77 million US dollars.
- On the main board, five stocks were up, led by ACLEDA Bank, while three stocks were down, with Sihanoukville Autonomous Port as the biggest loser of the day.
- Over on the growth board, JS Land was up, while Picasso City Garden and DBD Engineering stayed flat.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD remained stable at 4,053 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 99.61.
- Looking at global commodities, oil prices fell on Wednesday, retreating after a two-day rally following an unexpectedly large build in U.S. crude inventories, while supply disruptions in the Middle East lingered.
- Brent crude futures fell 0.67% to $107.53 US dollars a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures were down 1.55% at $104.19 US dollars a barrel. (0655 GMT)
- Gold prices ticked up on Wednesday as oil prices eased, while market participants looked ahead to the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision, with a rate hike largely priced in.
- Spot gold was up 0.8% at $4,326.83 US dollars per ounce, after touching a more than one-month low on Monday. U.S. gold futures for December delivery were down 0.8% at $4,367.20 US dollars. (0650 GMT)
Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin consolidated near $75,800 US dollars following a 3.25% drop driven by stalled US crypto regulation and U.S. Federal Reserve rate hike caution. Investors await the upcoming Federal Reserve decision, with an expected 25-basis-point hike largely priced in, though future rate guidance remains critical.
- Moving on now to other business-related news,
- The new U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Christopher Anderson, was officially sworn in by Secretary Marco Rubio, according to an official social media post from the official U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. An Army veteran, Ambassador Anderson will arrive in Phnom Penh focused on expanding trade and investment, strengthening security cooperation, and working with Cambodian partners to dismantle scam networks that steal billions from Americans and people around the world.
- Germany and Cambodia are set to deepen their economic and trade relations following the official appointment of Silke Röfer as the new Ambassador-Designate of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Cambodia. Ambassador Röfer met with Acting Head of State of Cambodia, Hun Sen, on September 15 to outline her vision for her tenure. Key Highlights from the meeting focused on Foreign Direct Investment, Core Economic Alignment and Expanding Trade Volume. Ambassador Röfer has expressed her commitment to actively promoting economic and trade cooperation, specifically aiming to encourage more German business leaders to invest directly in Cambodia. Bilateral trade between Germany and Cambodia has reached approximately $3 billion US dollars this year, cementing Germany's role as one of Cambodia’s premier European trading partners.
- Cambodian rice miller and exporter City Rice Import Export Co., Ltd. signed a 10,000-tonne rice purchase agreement with DILAI Trading Co., Private Limited on September 14, for export to the Philippines. H.E. Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce, presided over the signing ceremony, which was attended by ministry officials, representatives of the Philippine Embassy, industry leaders and other distinguished guests. The agreement marks a significant milestone for Cambodia’s rice sector and is expected to further strengthen trade ties between Cambodia and the Philippines. The CEO of City Rice Import Export described this deal as more than a commercial agreement, calling it a new development for Cambodia’s rice industry which demonstrates the growing confidence of international buyers in the quality, safety, competitiveness and supply capacity of Cambodian rice.
