Watch the video in English above.

  • We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian stock markets rose on Monday following Wall Street’s lead, largely because a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report eased fears that the U.S. Federal Reserve will raise interest rates anytime soon.
  • Japan's Nikkei rose 2.0%, while South Korea’s KOSPI added 0.8%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.7%. Chinese blue chips eased 0.7% after data showed consumer and producer price inflation came in under forecasts in July, underlining the softness of domestic demand.
  • Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.53 points or 0.11% to 464.63. Total trade volume was down with 117,338 shares changing hands at a total value of 548.2 million riel or over $135,000 US dollars.
  • On the main board, three stocks were up, led by Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, while the rest of the board stayed flat. Over on the growth board, JS Land and Picasso City Garden were down while DBD Engineering stayed flat.
  • Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD strengthened slightly to 4,053 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 99.63.
  • Looking at global commodities, oil prices were little ‌changed on Monday after surrendering earlier gains, as optimism over talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was tempered by Iran's insistence that the United States satisfy several demands before the waterway could reopen.
  • Brent crude futures stood at $83.54 US dollars a barrel, off 1 cent, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 0.2% to $78.03 US dollars a barrel. (0643 GMT)
  • Gold inched higher after prices ‌hit a seven-week high in the previous session, as weak U.S. jobs data tempered expectations for U.S. Federal Reserve rate hikes and investors look ahead to inflation data for fresh clues on the central bank's policy path. Spot gold was up 0.1% at $4,345.09 US dollars per ounce.
  • Prices hit their highest since June 17 on Friday after weak U.S. nonfarm payrolls data. U.S. gold futures rose 0.1% to $4,404.80 US dollars. (0856 GMT)
  • Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin held near $65,200 US dollars, up 3.7% on the week. The move capped a recovery from an early-August low near $62,000 US dollars, and the whole top of the market came with it. Ether traded near $1,925 US dollars and BNB, Solana and TRON all posted weekly gains.

  • Moving on now to other business-related news,
    • Cambodia has launched a long-term river basin planning initiative that will help guide future water resources management and investment across the Tonle Sap River Basin Group, marking an important step towards strengthening water security, climate resilience and sustainable development. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was launched during the Inception Workshop for the Cambodia Resilient River Basin Masterplan (CRRBM) Phase 1 held on August 7. As Cambodia’s economy continues to grow and demands on water resources become increasingly complex, long-term river basin planning will play an increasingly important role in Cambodia’s sustainable development.
    • The Skills Development Fund (SDF) has partnered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and China’s Zhejiang Construction Technician College to launch an intensive overseas training initiative. Taking place in Hangzhou, China, from August 2 to 14, the two-week cross-border programme brings together 50 selected Cambodian technical trainers and industry professionals—including 12 women—from local training institutions and key industrial sectors. Participants are receiving specialised instruction in advanced, high-demand disciplines, specifically Digital Construction utilising Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Revit software, alongside Industrial Electricity focusing on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
    • H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, has urged and called for solidarity, joint efforts, and resource mobilisation to help improve the livelihoods of communities in protected areas. The Minister made these remarks while presiding over the opening ceremony of the discussion forum on "Financing for Ecosystems and Nature-Positive Agriculture" held on August 10 in Phnom Penh. He added that the Ministry of Environment has implemented key priority strategies aligned with the Royal Government's directives through the Circular Strategy on Environment 2023–2028, which focuses on three core pillars: Clean, Green, and Sustainable. Ultimately, the Minister highlighted the critical role of the forum in uniting stakeholders to mobilise financial resources, promote nature-positive agriculture, improve local community livelihoods, and enhance regional ecosystem conservation.
