- We start with a quick look at regional markets. Asian shares were mostly higher on Wednesday and oil prices fell after the U.S. stock market rose to more records.
- In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 initially was lifted by gains for tech-related shares but closed nearly unchanged.
- The Kospi in Seoul gained 2.3% as Samsung Electronics' shares gained 2.3%.
- In Taiwan, the Taiex surged 1.7%.
- Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1% and the Shanghai Composite index shed 1%.
- Zooming in on Cambodia’s market—the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index was up 0.14 points or 0.03 % to 431.76.
- Total trade volume was up with 170,413 shares changing hands at a total value of 921.4 million riel or close to $230,000 US dollars.
- On the main board, three stocks were up, led by Pestech Cambodia, while four stocks were down, with Grand Twins International as the biggest loser of the day.
- Over on the growth board, DBD Engineering was up, while JS Land and Picasso City Garden were down.
- Shifting to the exchange rate, the Khmer riel to USD strengthened slightly to 4,028 riel per US Dollar, while the US Dollar index hovered around 99.08.
- Turning to global commodities, oil prices eased from recent highs on Wednesday, erasing some of the previous day's 4% gain as traders sought clarity on negotiations between Iran and the U.S. after renewed hostilities set back efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- Brent crude futures fell 1.53% to $98.06 US dollars a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lost 2.02% to $91.99 US dollars a barrel. (0633 GMT)
- Gold prices edged lower as investors assessed ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, and awaited comments from U.S. Federal Reserve officials for monetary policy clues.
- Spot gold was down 0.4% at $4,486.26 US dollars per ounce.
- U.S. gold futures for June delivery fell 0.4% to $4,485.70 US dollars. (0725 GMT)
- Looking at the crypto market, Bitcoin dropped below $76,000 US dollars continuing the slump that began a fortnight ago, it’s tied to heavy ETF outflows.
- The primary catalyst is over $1.9 billion US dollars in outflows over the last seven trading sessions, while Ethereum’s bearish price action of late can be tied to a ten-day streak of negative ETF flows, with around $485 million US dollars exiting the various Ethereum ETF funds.
- Moving on now to other business-related news:
- Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Wang Wenbin, presided over the inauguration ceremony of a new rubber processing factory operated by KIMS Rubber (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. in Thbong Khmum province on May 27. KIMS Rubber was established and legally registered in Cambodia in 2024 with the aim of promoting agro-industrial development through the production and processing of international-standard rubber products meeting European Union (EU) standards for export markets. The project represents an investment of approximately $30 million US dollars on nearly 15 hectares of land, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of rubber.
- Preah Sihanouk Province is actively rolling out the red carpet for Chinese enterprises, inviting investors from eastern China’s Hefei City to leverage the coastal province's rapidly expanding industrial, commercial, and tourism ecosystems. The Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province led a high-level Cambodian delegation to the "Hefei (Anhui Province) - Preah Sihanouk Province (Cambodia) Industrial Investors Matchmaking Forum" held in China on May 26. Organised in collaboration with the Hefei Municipal Administration and the Cambodian Consulate General in Shanghai, the forum was held with the aim to deepen bilateral economic ties and foster practical trade partnerships.
- Two Secretaries of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, led and organized a forum on "Connecting and Strengthening Business Relations Between Farmers, Agricultural Communities, and Mango Purchasing, Processing, and Exporting Companies" in Battambang Province on May 26. Key discussions during the forum focused on the Agricultural Policy of the Cambodian government, the strategic interventions of the Ministry of Agriculture—particularly through the General Directorate of Agriculture and the ASPIRE-AT program—and the ongoing challenges faced by farmers and agricultural communities. Additionally, participants addressed loan procedures from the ARDB bank, specific requirements of mango buyers, phytosanitary standards for foreign markets, and the implementation of contract farming production.
